Side Tracked: The Looking Glass

This is just a little piece of information I learned in Sociology Class about how self image and esteem works. It's called Cooley's Looking Glass. It's hard to say if this will help any young adult dealing with High-School persona or fitting into that perfect image in life that we all find ourselves searching for, but I felt it was worth mentioning here.

The Looking Glass works 3 ways.

1.We imagine how we must appear to others.

2.We imagine the judgement of that appearance.

3.We develop our self through the judgments of others.

In the end it all boils down to acceptance into Society and face it we all want to be accepted. But certain types of acceptance isn't worth risking your life, dignity, health, family or finances over. Don't go trying to be the Jones's burying yourself in debt but Don't be afraid to Step out of your Shell either. By stepping out of the normal or your comfort zone you'll discover new things about yourself.

It's called "The Full on Experience" in Austrailia. The Full on Experience is a method of getting people to step outside of their comfort-zones or niche and challenge themselves. The method works like this:

Only we can makes things happen for ourselves. You have to control your state, which includes your mind, body, and emotions. By controlling your state, you can control my behavior, and by controlling your behavior, you can control your results.

How many of us would just jump at the chance to rappel down a 600Foot Cliff that was only secured by a tree, rope and harness? Not very many of us I'm sure. So how about if we take it a few steps smaller and into our own homes.

Let's activate our Reticular Activating System or RAS. This filters sensory information and is programmed by thoughts and beliefs.

Now let's do an RAS exercise.

*Stand up and go over to a wall

*Put your arms straight out to your sides

*Turn your upper body till it cannot go any further

* Make a mark on the wall with a pencil you can erase.

*Now close your eyes and think hard about being as flexible as a rubber band

*Turn again Keeping your eyes closed

*Now open them.

You should've stretched past your mark.

This is just a very small example of how we can over come our comfort zone, our niche and venture out into new things.

A List Everyone Should Follow

FUTURE CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIETY NEED TO KNOW

Below is a list that I have composed that every High-School student and young adult should live by and follow in order to get ahead in Life.

1. Apply Yourself hard in your early highschool and college years. Grow up around 10th grade realizing that your life is coming and that mom and dad aren't always going to be there.

2. Strive for Independance as much as you can. Learn to stand on your own two feet without help from others in any department/aspect in life. The feeling you get when you buy your first car, or can live on your own without help is amazing.

3. Learn to SAVE and How to Shop for Sales. Realize that material possessions of high value aren't necessary and neither is keeping up with the Jones's or any magazine. Remember: The Jones's don't own their large House, over sized cars or designer clothes, their credit card debt and bank do.

3-A.When you Get your first job Open up at least 2 Accounts both of them Savings and have 5-10$ from every paycheck placed into another savings account that you will NEVER EVER touch. This will become your millionair retirement money.

4. Don't let your head fall into your ass. Once it's there is takes alot to get it back out.

5. Observe and Listen other people first before opening your mouth with an opinion.

5-A. Respect everyone older than you by 5+ years.

5-B. Respect everyone 4 years older than you and anyone younger than you at first glance. Observe and Listen to them before realizing that they aren't worth your time to spend thinking about them and move on.

6. Don't sweat the Small Stuff and it's All Small Stuff. (Also the name of a Book) Stressing out, worrying and fretting over things that follow you into the night destroying your sleep isn't worth it. Realize that everything in life in a glass cup and no matter how much white glove catering you give it its going to break anyway.

7. Get a good 8 hours sleep every night.

8. Exercise for 30 minutes a day or for 15 minutes twice a day.
